Dog waste in the community can pose potential health, environmental and amenity hazards. In public places such as parks, and beaches, public opinion surveys show a big concern about the presence of dog feces. Studies show this might be a contributing fact as to why dogs are banned from certain public places. The problem is that dog waste can contain harmful bacteria and parasites. This can also get into natural waterways, which may contribute to higher counts of parasites, bacteria, and viruses at our local beaches, after a heavy rain.

It can take more than one whole year for the feces to breakdown. Dog feces can carry Coccidia, an intestinal parasite, Parvo, a virus, Roundworm, and Hookworms. Children are at greater risk, due to the tendency to put their hands in their mouth and touch their eyes. Not only are these infections serious for your pet, they can cause humans to become very sick as well. Pregnant women, if infected run the risk of affecting their unborn child. Why don’t people pick up after their dogs?

There is a definite problem concerned with people picking up their dogs feces. Some of the reasons are the embarrassment of carrying around the dog feces in a bag. Another reason is that there is a distaste concerning the smell or fear of coming into direct contact with it. Forgetting to bring a bag for disposal with them on their dog walks. For some it is the inconvenience of carrying a bag for disposal, and then finding a place to throw it away. Some people are just unaware of the health and environmental impacts of the dog waste.

People are more likely to pick up after their dog if:

They see other owners doing the same thing and if pet waste stations or trash receptacles are close by. Also, if they see that the area is already clean, they are more likely to clean up after their dog.
